With the government planning to effectively eliminate the tuition burden for new students at regional national universities starting in the 2027 academic year, private universities in the province, already struggling to recruit new students due to a declining school-age population, are feeling increasingly alarmed. Between universities in the province With annual tuition differences reaching up to 5.6 million won, 'zero tuition' has emerged as a new variable influencing university choices for examinees and parents. By region, Sejong had the highest at 9,128,492 won, followed by Gyeonggi at 8,294,388 won, Ulsan is 7,784,619 won, Chungnam 7,352,889 won, Gyeongbuk 7,219,960 won, and Gangwon 6,872,858 won. The gap between universities in the province is even greater: Yonsei University had the highest average annual average at 9,212,142 won, followed by Kyungdong University at 8,651,315 won, Hallym University at 8,226,650 won, Sangji University at 8,102,878 won, totaling four schools exceeding 8 million won, Halla University at 7,767,469 won, and Catholic Kwandong University at 7,725,839 won. In this situation, if the tuition burden for freshmen at regional national universities disappears, there are predictions that the competition between universities to attract new students could change completely. Previously, relatively low tuition fees were cited as a strength of national universities, but on top of that, the benefit of 'free education' is added to the advantage. In particular, regional private universities, facing the double burden of declining school-age populations and preference for universities in the metropolitan area, are concerned about the direct impact. In addition to the university's educational conditions, employment rates, scholarships, and existing competitiveness in admissions,   if 'tuition burden' becomes a key criterion for choosing a university, the burden of recruiting new students at private universities, which have relatively higher tuition fees, will inevitably increase even more.
