In the 2023 Impact Ranking by Times Higher Education (THE), a global university evaluation agency, Western Sydney University in Australia ranked first for the second consecutive year. It scored especially high among 17 categories in areas such as gender equality, responsible consumption and production, and collaboration toward goals. In addition, research focused on education quality, environment and sustainability, health and well-being, and sustainable urban and local communities, responsible consumption and production, and more. Additionally, the pilot operation of a solar-powered electric vehicle parking lot was also recognized as an operational achievement.


The University of Tasmania ranked fifth. In particular, it ranked first in the climate change response category. Since 2016, it has been certified carbon neutral and has been promoting sustainability in university life . It operates a sustainability committee to realize this. It also engages in sustainable transportation projects and waste minimization activities. Australia ranks within the top 25 with the most universities, with six universities making the list. Canada followed with five universities, followed by the UK with four, and in Asia, besides Korea and Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, and Taiwan each ranked one university.


Meanwhile, for the fifth year this year, Times Higher Education has been publishing impact rankings. Divided into 17 sectors, the results are evaluated by combining the scores from the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the 'Cooperation for the Goals' category, and the three other highest-scoring categories.
